Obviously it depends on your level of intensity - whether you are surfing, doing a steady downwind paddle or doing distance training but generally your food and drink consumption on the board is going to be similar to that of a cyclist.

If you are surfing at the beach its easy enough to come back to the shore every hour or so for an energy bar or a banana. If you are doing distance work at a moderate pace a good guide is to eat something small every 30 mins or so BEFORE you get hungry. You can wear a small 'camelbak' type backpack with a drinks bladder and room for food. Alternatively you can use the pockets in your board shorts for energy bars.

If you really don't like anything on your back or in your pocket you could retro-fit a cargo net to the front of your board. To do this you want 4 small holes in a square pattern about a foot apart from each other about 2 feet back from the front of your board. Screw small screws into these holes and you've got fixings to secure stretchable cargo netting on which you can safely hold a waterproof bag under.

For off the board fitness you will want to ensure you get a good balance of carbohydrates, protein and fibre. Don't eat too soon before heading out on the board and always make sure you get a good source of protein as soon as you come in at the end of your session. Whatever your body absorbs in the 20 minutes after exercise is what it makes the most of. If its an energy drink or very healthy meal it will thank you for it and reward you with more strength in the future.

A good energy supplement system is very important for any sporting activity. Friends of mine who are pro-cyclists are well versed in this and have put me on F.R.S. energy products. The last 6 months have been phenomenal with my recovery times coming right down and my distances and speed going right up. Its wholeheartedly recommended and if you click the link I've got below you can get a weeks trial for FREE.
