Sup paddles come in various materials. Typically beginner paddles consist of a plastic blade and alloy handle. These are great to get started with and are more forgiving if you hit the rails of your board with the edge of your paddle.
You can also get carbon fiber paddles which are super light and are designed to flex in certain positions in the shaft where needed. The only concern with carbon fiber paddles is the higher cost to pay for the increased performance. A compromise can be made by getting a carbon fiber paddle blade connected to a fiber glass handle.
For the real afficianados a real wood paddle is a must.

Don't forget to ensure you get the paddle in the right size. Check if the handle can be cut down when you purchase it and remember once its cut down there's no such thing as cutting it back up a bit if you find you've done it too short!
